The Day My Indoor Cat Made Friends With A Bird
Hermione Granger in the Cat-bird seat
Recently, I started a new job where I work from home. I set up an office in my second bedroom, and most days, my cats lounge on the couch or explore the discarded boxes on the floor. If I’m fortunate, one of them will nap on my lap as I work.
In the afternoon, one or more of them sit by the windowsill. They mostly watch the birds and squirrels in the trees nearby. But, I suspect they’ve seen my neighbors do some interesting things from that window.
On really warm sunny days, they sun themselves in the sunbeams that shine through the window in the afternoon. They occasionally stretch and change positions as the sunbeams move.. Sometimes, they get up from their naps and saunter over to say hi before moving on to another room.
Last Friday afternoon, Hermione climbed into my lap. She made a few biscuits preparing to assume her nap position. As she was settling in, I glanced over to the window and saw a pretty large grayish-blue bird, maybe a pigeon, land on the windowsill. It tapped the glass three times with its beak and waited.
Did that bird just stop to say hi to my cat?
Hermione’s ears perked up. She heard it too. That nap wasn’t going to happen…
